आज 15 सितंबर 1948 के ही दिन आज़ाद भारत की पहली फ़्लैगशिप INS बंबई (अब मुंबई) के तट पर पहुँची थी। तत्कालीन प्रधानमंत्री पंडित जवाहरलाल नेहरू खुद इसका स्वागत करने पहुँचे थे।
जनवरी, 1950 में भारत के गणतंत्र बनने के बाद इसे नाम दिया गया- INS Delhi, और जून, 1950 में कमांडर आधार कुमार चटर्जी इसके पहले भारतीय कमांडर बने।
